Have you ever heard the statement, “reading is fundamental”? Well it is, especially when it comes knowing God. When we choose not to develop good bible reading habits, we leave ourselves in a position of not knowing the truth concerning God’s love for us, and the wonderful plan He has for our lives. When we don’t know something we are ignorant. When we choose to remain ignorant by not reading, we give the devil an advantage over our lives. Ignorance is the perfect environment for deception, lies, and bondage. (See 2 Corinthians 2:11)
The apostle Paul warned the church of getting involved in useless arguments that would destroy the faith of men and women who listened to and believed those conversations. The wrong words; or wrong teaching will eat away truth from your heart like a cancer, leaving you with no faith in God.
2 Timothy 2:14-18 …Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
According to the scripture above, the people’s faith in God was destroyed because Hymenaeus and Philetus taught the wrong things. Their words did not help the people to have faith in God. When you are ignorant, you will swallow anything, you will believe wrong, and you will accept a lie as the truth. Jesus said when we continue in His word, we will know the truth, and the truth will make us free. (See John 8:31-32) Developing good bible reading habits is the primary way we continue in the word.
To have faith in God is to trust God, if you don’t know God, you will not trust Him. If you don’t know God anyone can lie to you about God, and how He thinks about you. The way you get to know God is through reading the bible. John 1:1 says …In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. God and His word are one; God’s word describes His character, His nature, and His love for mankind.
By responding to lies and suggestions with the truth of God’s word our faith in God will remain strong. Jesus demonstrated this principle in Luke 4:2-13. Jesus was able to respond properly because he knew what was written. Every temptation the devil brought to Jesus, Jesus answered by saying, “It is written”. The only way for anyone to know, “it is written”, is to read the word of God.
Good bible reading habits eliminate ignorance, and renew the mind to God’s will and purpose. Your life will be transformed in the process, and you will know God’s will for your life.
Romans 12:2 (New Living Translation) …Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Make a commitment to daily read your bible, your faith in God depends on it.
